Monday Spark: Stop worrying about bad news.

sign of bad newsWhen you watch the news on TV or browse your favorite news websites, it’s guaranteed you’ll find some really bad news on page one.

The news media put a lot of emphasis on bad, scary and generally depressing news.

Right now you can take your pick from rising gas and food prices, the looming “fiscal cliff”, riots in Europe, nuclear weapons in Iran and so on.

And if world news doesn’t do it for you, there are plenty of depressing stories you can find closer to home – about bullying in schools, people losing their homes, and whole communities being washed away by hurricanes.

One way or another, whichever news source you look at, you can be guaranteed to be overwhelmed with bad news.

Before you go hide under the bed for the next 10 years, here are a couple of things to consider.

1. There is plenty of good news out there, it just doesn’t get onto the front page. Don’t allow yourself to become depressed by the bad stuff the media choose to thrust in your face day after day. All that bad news will drag you down and make your future look bleak.

2. 99.99% of the bad things going on in the world are totally outside of your control. You can’t change them. You can’t fix them. But you CAN choose to create a wonderful and positive future for yourself and those you love. Focus on what you can change, not on what you can’t change.

Your future is in your own hands. The choices you make are your own responsibility. The lens through which you choose to view the world is of your own making. If you choose to drown yourself in bad news, nobody is going to stop you.

Get the idea? It’s all up to you.

If you find that your inner optimism is being overwhelmed by all the bad news you come across, there is a simple remedy you can try.

Stop reading and watching the news.

You don’t have to stop seeing what’s going on in the world forever, but you can give yourself a break. Take a week off. And don’t worry, the world will keep on going without your daily attention.

Then see what kind of difference it makes to your own life. You’ll probably find that your optimistic side expands and takes up more space in your life. Suddenly, your own “good news” will get a little breathing space.

And then, regardless of what’s going on in the rest of the world, a more positive and rewarding future will feel a whole lot more possible.
