Monday Spark: Find your own 2:57 Moment.

2:57 momentIn my first Monday Spark post, a few weeks ago, I showed a video of Jeb Corliss jumping off a cliff.

That video inspired me to make some changes to a presentation I gave several weeks ago at the AWAI Bootcamp at Delray Beach in Florida.

I showed the video and, since then, I have seen a few mentions on Facebook and on blogs of what I described in my presentation as the “2:57 moment”.

So I thought I had better explain what that’s all about.

First off, here is that video again. Watch it now, and pause it at 2 minutes and 57 seconds.

What you’ll see is Jeb Corliss with a huge smile on his face.

In an interview, Jeb made the point that when he stands at the top of a cliff or tall building, he is terrified. Jumping from a great height is as scary for him as it would be for you or me.

But he makes the leap, because he wants to get to that 2:57 moment.

In other words, he pushes through the fear in order to achieve his reward – those few seconds of sheer bliss and laughter.

That’s the message I wanted to share with the audience in Delray Beach.

As freelancers we have our own moments of fear and terror. We may be scared to cold-call a prospective clients. We may be terrified that our freelance business will fail, and our families will be disappointed in us. We may feel nervous when submitting an estimate.

To get past these fears, and to make sure you keep moving forward, you need to be rewarded with your own 2:57 moments.

What is it that makes you break out in a huge, Jeb Corliss smile?

For me, it’s when a client calls and tells me the work I did for his company beat their control. Or when a former coaching client calls to tell me how great they are doing. Or when a big check comes in and I’m able to treat my family in some unexpected way.

Freelancing isn’t always easy. We all need our own 2:57 moments as an incentive to make those scary leaps.

What’s yours?
